A name. Halloween is full of things that look alike, so the moment something carries a person’s own name it stops being seasonal and starts being theirs. That is the entire difference between a decoration and a keepsake, and it costs nothing extra in thought.

Far more people than you would guess. Partners, best friends, a child having their very first Halloween, a neighbour who always decorates the whole street, a teacher, a colleague you actually like. October has no gift list, which is exactly what makes appearing on one so nice.

A lovely American habit: you leave a little bundle on someone’s doorstep, ring the bell and slip away. They are “boo’d,” and the fun is passing it along to the next house. It began between neighbours and now travels between friends, partners and parents just as happily.

Choose the mood before the object. Pumpkins and black cats feel like autumn — warm, homely, right for absolutely anyone. Ghosts and trick-or-treat feel like childhood, playful and full of nostalgia. Witches, skeletons and the spooky end are the theatrical ones: bold, funny, deliberately over the top.

It is one of the best. Adults love Halloween and rarely give themselves permission to enjoy it out loud. Handing one to someone gives them that permission, and because nobody expects anything at all in October, it lands as pure thoughtfulness.

Specificity. A first name, a nickname only two people use, the year something began, a dog’s name. Anyone can buy the same design; nobody else can buy the one that names the person in front of you. That is what turns a nice object into a kept one.
