Skoll: The Sun Chaser
In Norse mythology, Sköll is a wolf who chases the sun across the sky during Ragnarök, which is believed to be the end times in Norse cosmology. He is one of two wolves born from the giantess Angrboða’s union with Loki.
According to the myth, Sköll’s pursuit of the sun is relentless. It is said that during Ragnarök, he will finally catch up with the sun and devour it, plunging the world into darkness.
Sköll’s name translates to “Treachery” or “Mockery,” reflecting his role as a harbinger of doom. His presence in Viking mythology serves as a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and death.
Hati: The Moon Devourer
Hati, also known as Hróðvitnir or “Famous Wolf,” is another son of Fenrir mentioned in Norse mythology. Like his brother Sköll, Hati plays a significant role in shaping the fate of the cosmos.
In Norse belief, Hati chases Máni, the personification of the moon. Just like Sköll and his pursuit of the sun, Hati relentlessly pursues Máni across the night sky. It is believed that during Ragnarök, Hati will succeed in catching up with Máni and devour him.
The symbolism behind Hati’s actions represents chaos overcoming order and signifies an impending cataclysmic event within Viking cosmology.
